How jarmo
got there
Jarmo is from Lapland Finland where with the long northern winter, it is normal to grow up with winter sports. During his childhood he practiced many local sports, ice hockey, downhill skiing, ski jumping and during the summer, football and biking to mention a few. Training in a wide range of different sports was a way of life, and games and competitions took him all over Northern Finland and Sweden.
During his twenties, the call of the big wide world became overwhelming. He left Lapland and hitchhiked to the city to find a way to earn money to be able to travel around the world. His desire was to go and explore bigger mountains in places he had heard people talk about.
This led Jarmo to several years in a pleasant loop working inter seasons wherever there was a work to be done and doing different sports while traveling. During these travels he explored the Amazon rain forest, dived on the Pacific coast at Peru, later skied Cordillera Blanca Peru as well as a Bolivian ski resort. He drove half way around Australia in a mission to learn to surf and took a couple of trips to Indonesia all the while pushing his own skiing, and spending more and more time and longer seasons in the Alps and Lyngen Alps in Norway.
A smart man named John Lennon once said “Life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans”. Jarmo met a nice, smart and beautiful girl who was good company to hang out with. After a while, children came a long and it was time to give up his traveller’s life. He took on the responsibility and followed through the path laid years earlier and started his training to be a mountain guide. While working on oil rig offshore rope access and doing mountain guide training it was logical to move to live in Chamonix with his family.
